Breaking New Ground: Jessica Campbell Appointed to Seattle Kraken Coaching Staff

In a historic move, the Seattle Kraken have appointed Jessica Campbell to their coaching staff, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time coach in the NHL's storied history. Campbell's appointment marks a significant milestone in a pioneering career already filled with numerous firsts and accolades.

Campbell previously served as an assistant coach with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership and coaching skills. Notably, she managed the Firebirds' power play, showcasing her strategic acumen and commitment to developing players. Her efforts culminated in forward Tye Kartye winning the 2023 AHL Dudley "Red" Garrett Award for most outstanding rookie. Kartye, who amassed 20 points (11 goals, nine assists) over 77 games for the Kraken, benefitted greatly from Campbell's mentorship.

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma expressed his admiration for Campbell, stating, “During our tenure in Coachella Valley, I saw firsthand Jessica's commitment to player development. Her ability to establish relationships with her players, specifically Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans, was an important factor in this hire. I'm looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level.”

In addition to her successes in the AHL, Campbell has made significant contributions on the international stage. She was the first woman to coach a men's national team during the 2022 IIHF Men's World Championship with Team Germany, working with talents such as Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer. Her adeptness in power-skating coaching has also seen her work with top-tier athletes, including Natalie Spooner and Joel Edmundson.

Reflecting on her journey, Campbell remarked, “I just focused on the task at hand in coaching, but absolutely, it's obviously a tremendous opportunity and I'm honored to be where I am and to be -- it's a humbling feeling to be a part of the Kraken organization.” Her relentless dedication to her craft and ability to maintain a growth mindset have propelled her to these unprecedented heights in her career.

Campbell's extensive resume also includes a noteworthy performance during the 2014-15 season, where she served as team captain in the first-ever CWHL All-Star Game. Her role as a trailblazer extended further when, in 2022, she became the first woman to coach in the American Hockey League (AHL). Her time with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers in 2021 and subsequent work with the Firebirds have clearly demonstrated her ability to succeed and innovate in various coaching environments.

Joining the Seattle Kraken, Campbell is expected to take charge of the team's power play, bringing her expertise and strategic vision to the NHL level. Her ability to foster player development and her keen understanding of the game will be invaluable assets to the Kraken as they aim to build on their recent successes.

Campbell expressed her philosophy with humility and determination: “For me, that's what it's about. Just putting my head down and doing the work. You know, where it takes me it takes me, but I'm obviously honored to be on this path and continue to just do the good work that it takes to hopefully reach that goal.”

The Kraken roster itself has seen recent enhancements, including the signing of 2024 Stanley Cup champion Brandon Montour, underscoring the team's ambitions for the upcoming season.

Campbell's groundbreaking appointment is not only a momentous occasion for the NHL but also a beacon of inspiration for future generations of women in hockey. Her achievements illustrate the transformative impact of dedication, expertise, and the courage to break new ground in a traditionally male-dominated arena.

Summing up her approach, Campbell stated, “I'm a big believer in just keeping a growth mindset every day. Obviously, my goal is to continue to coach at the highest level, but timelines aren't necessary for me and definitely not where my focus is.” This philosophy promises to drive both her career and the progress of the Seattle Kraken forward, as they strive for excellence in the NHL.
