Anaheim Ducks to Revolutionize Local Game Broadcasts
The Anaheim Ducks are set to revolutionize their local game broadcasts with an innovative shift that combines direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional local broadcasts. This move is strategically designed to enhance accessibility for fans throughout the Ducks' extensive TV market.
Starting next season, 65 of the Ducks' games will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles, specifically Channel 13. In a significant development for regional fans, every game will also be streamed on the Victory+ streaming service at no cost. This service, which will be free and ad-supported, aims to ensure that fans can easily access Ducks games across multiple platforms.
"We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air), will see locally broadcast games free of charge," said Ducks president Aaron Teats. "It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms."
The Ducks' decision to pivot to this new broadcasting model comes after their contract with Diamond Sports Group expired at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, currently entangled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, had been the former broadcaster for the team. Despite the financial struggles, Diamond Sports Group remains active, set to carry games for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and holding agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
Fans residing in the Ducks' regional territory—which includes Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii—will benefit from this accessible broadcasting approach. The regional territory will be well covered by the Victory+ app, which will be downloadable on smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones starting in September.
The Anaheim Ducks have partnered with A Parent Media for this new broadcasting arrangement. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, highlighted the Ducks' readiness for this transition: "The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background." This partnership is anticipated to enhance fan engagement and provide seamless access to game content.
Both established and emerging streaming platforms are increasingly being utilized by sports teams to widen their reach and engage with fans. The Ducks' ambitious plan mirrors a trend seen across the NHL. The Florida Panthers, for instance, are moving their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, and the Dallas Stars also plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+.
Meanwhile, fans can rest assured that familiar voices will continue to accompany the action. Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will remain integral parts of the Ducks' broadcast team, ensuring continuity and familiarity for dedicated viewers.
This strategic shift marks a new era for the Anaheim Ducks, emphasizing inclusivity and broad accessibility. By providing a free, versatile platform for game broadcasts, the Ducks are ahead of the curve in addressing modern fans' viewing preferences. It’s not just about watching a game; it’s about creating an engaging experience that brings the community together, regardless of where they are located within the regional territory.
The adoption of the Victory+ platform signifies a noteworthy transformation in how the Ducks’ games are consumed. The combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional over-the-air broadcasts promises to reach a broader audience and solidify the fan base's connection to the team. With these changes set to roll out for the upcoming season, Ducks fans can look forward to an enhanced and accessible viewing experience that aligns with the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting.
