Mekhi Becton Adjusts to New Role with Philadelphia Eagles
In May, offensive lineman Mekhi Becton embarked on a new chapter in his professional football career by signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. The former New York Jets tackle is now navigating the complexities and challenges of a new position along the Eagles' offensive line.
Becton was initially brought in to serve as a backup for Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson at tackle, roles critical to maintaining the stability and strength of the Eagles' offensive front. However, the Eagles have also eyed a different path for Becton, planning to deploy his skills at the guard position.
This strategic move came into sharper focus during the Eagles' mandatory minicamp, where Becton filled the gap at the left guard spot. The opportunity arose when Landon Dickerson was absent for personal reasons and later sidelined by a lacerated toe. Rising to the occasion, Becton demonstrated his adaptability, smoothly transitioning to the interior line position.
Becton's physical attributes, particularly his impressive arm length, present a significant advantage over typical defensive tackles. Reflecting on this, Becton noted, "I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that."
However, the transition hasn't been without its hurdles. "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with," Becton explained. "Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It’s right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away." The intricacies of the guard position require a quicker reaction time compared to playing tackle, where players often have a moment to assess the defensive setup.
Despite the challenges, Becton's adaptability and readiness are evident. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he stated confidently. His willingness to learn and his positive attitude were palpable throughout the team’s activities. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do," he added, emphasizing his commitment to continually improve.
During training camp, Becton’s competition for the starting right guard spot grew fiercer as he challenged Tyler Steen for the role. However, he has not played right guard yet, so the training camp and upcoming preseason games will be a crucial testing ground for his ability to adjust and perform under pressure. In his words, "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready."
Becton's past with the New York Jets showed him facing issues with injuries and inconsistent play, factors that he aims to overcome with the Eagles. His focus remains on being prepared and seizing opportunities as they arise. "I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," Becton mentioned, highlighting his determination and readiness to adapt to his new role.
As he continues to acclimate to the team and position, Becton remains poised to make a significant impact. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he remarked, reiterating his readiness to contribute to the team’s success, regardless of his starting status.
The coming weeks will be critical in defining Becton’s role within the Eagles. The eyes of the coaching staff and fans alike will be on him as he strives to carve out his place on the roster, helping to fortify an already formidable offensive line.
