Impressive Performance in the Circuit des Ardennes
In a remarkable display of skill and teamwork, Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development has left an indelible mark on the Circuit des Ardennes this season, showcasing not only individual brilliance but also a collective effort that underlined their prowess in road cycling. Among the standout performers was Tijmen Graat, who surged to a commendable third place overall, fortifying his reputation in the cycling world.
The team's triumph was further highlighted by securing the prestigious best team award, an accolade that speaks volumes about their strategy, preparation, and execution throughout the race. Despite facing challenges, including the absence of Matthew Brennan in the final stage due to fitness concerns, the team's strategy pivoted around defending Graat's eminent position in the overall standings, a goal they pursued with unwavering determination.
Teamwork, Tactics, and Tenacity
Jed Smithson, Morten Nørtoft, and Tom Schellekens emerged as the linchpins in the team's strategy, dedicating their efforts to support Graat’s quest. Their teamwork paid dividends as Graat managed an eighth-place finish in the final stage, cementing his third-place standing overall. Responding to his performance, Graat expressed satisfaction, acknowledging the superiority of two competitors while reflecting on his efforts to climb higher up the podium.
Another intriguing narrative from this year's Circuit des Ardennes was the race's role in challenging Graat, propelling his development as a cyclist. "We chose this race to challenge me. Here I learn to position, ride better corners, and climb better. Besides, I really liked going for my own chance," Graat explained, shedding light on the personal growth opportunities the race presented. His affinity for longer climbs was evident, albeit this course demanded rapid accelerations, a scenario where the team's camaraderie shone brightly, especially in positioning and protecting Graat during critical stages of the race.
Tom Schellekens, in particular, played a pivotal role in the final stage, not only countering several attacks but also securing a commendable fourth place. This collective effort underscored the team's strength and was instrumental in clinching the team classification victory, a fitting reward for their hard work and strategic acumen.
Leadership and Vision
Sierk-Jan de Haan, the architect behind the team's strategy, lauded the performance, underscoring the team's objective of shining in every stage, "The goal was to finish as good as possible in every stage and that worked out well. The boys did a great race," he elaborated. De Haan's strategic foresight was evident as he orchestrated a plan to safeguard Graat's third position amidst the challenges posed by the course’s dynamics, favoring cyclists adept at rapid accelerations.
"Today we did everything we could to secure Tijmen's third place. We knew it was going to be difficult because Tijmen specializes more in longer climbs. The course was such where you had to accelerate a lot. The guys kept a constant eye on Tijmen so he was well positioned going into the final circuit. Tom played a nice role in the final by not only countering several attacks but also finishing fourth. As a team, we were very strong and it's fantastic that it was rewarded with the team classification," De Haan reflected, encapsulating the team's journey through the Circuit des Ardennes.
