Mike Onwenu's Evolution with the Patriots: A Journey of Flexibility and Excellence
In March, the New England Patriots solidified their commitment to Mike Onwenu by securing him with a three-year, $57 million contract. This move signifies the team's recognition of Onwenu's invaluable versatility and consistent performance since being selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Over the past few years, Onwenu has developed into a crucial component of the Patriots' offensive line, showcasing his ability to adapt and excel in various roles.
A Versatile Rookie Year
Entering the NFL as a right tackle, Onwenu quickly made his presence felt. Throughout his rookie season, he cemented his role at right tackle, proving to be a reliable and steadfast protector on the edge. His impressive performance did not go unnoticed, setting the stage for a career marked by versatility and adaptability.
Shifting Roles and Responsibilities
In his second year, Onwenu's versatility was put to the test as he split duties between right and left tackle. This ability to switch seamlessly between positions underlined his exceptional skill set and football intellect. Onwenu's constant evolution continued in 2022 when the Patriots moved him to the right guard position for most of the season. His adaptability was further showcased as he ended the year once again playing at right tackle.
During training activities, Onwenu continued to demonstrate his flexibility. He resumed his role at right tackle during OTAs, only to transition to right guard during mandatory minicamp. As training camp commenced, he maintained his position at right guard, highlighting his readiness to adapt to the team’s needs.
Building a Cohesive Offensive Line
The Patriots' approach to building a cohesive and effective offensive line often involves rotating players to determine the best fit. Onwenu acknowledges this strategy, stating, “It was essentially just practice in a few places. Days in and days out, we're going to be switching around, and it's going to be different lines, so just getting the best five out there and practicing, every guy practicing each position, and just knowing that you can play that position.”
Head Coach Jerod Mayo echoed this sentiment, explaining, “I've had this conversation with AVP [Alex Van Pelt]. I've also talked to Mike and the rest of those offensive linemen. Look, we're going to put the best five players out there on the field as an offensive line. If that means you've got to play guard or play tackle, I don't know. We'll see, it'll play itself out in camp. That's my mindset, it's about putting the best players on the field.”
During one notable practice session, Calvin Anderson assumed the right tackle position while Chukwuma Okorafor anchored the left tackle spot. Meanwhile, Sidy Sow played at left guard, David Andrews positioned himself at center, highlighting the continuous experimentation and determination to find the optimal lineup.
Adapting to Surprises
Onwenu's ability to adapt to new roles seems almost second nature to him. Reflecting on the changes, he shared, “It was a little surprising. Pretty much as a football player, I've done it in the past. I started as a guard, started as a jumbo tackle, and then I played tackle. It's just one of the positions that I play.” His extensive experience in multiple positions has undoubtedly contributed to his invaluable flexibility on the field.
Looking Forward
As the Patriots continue to evaluate and adjust their lineup during training camp, Onwenu’s flexibility remains a crucial asset. The early stages of live football have provided insights, but as Onwenu remarked, “It is very important. It's early now so we had the OTAs, we had the spring, but we're getting into live football now. As the practices and the days go on, we'll see who fits where and how that fits with the best five.”
Mike Onwenu’s journey with the New England Patriots is a testament to his resilience, adaptability, and skill. His ability to efficiently transition between positions not only underscores his personal talent but also reflects the team’s strategic emphasis on versatility and readiness. As the season progresses, Onwenu’s role within the team will likely continue to evolve, ensuring that the Patriots' offensive line remains robust and formidable.
